Packing list essentials for the Inca Trail in May

Definitely bring a good waterproof jacket, even in May the Andes weather changes fast
May is technically dry season, but the Andes weather is unpredictable, as JakRoberto said. For layers, focus on merino wool base layers (top and bottom) for the evenings and early mornings. You need a good quality, lightweight puffy jacket for camp and a fleece mid-layer for hiking.

Don't skimp on sun protection. The altitude makes the sun brutal. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, SPF 50 sunscreen, and sunglasses, even if it looks cloudy.

You definitely need a headlamp with extra batteries, even if you’re hiring porters. It’s essential for finding your way around the campsite at night and for the very early start on the final day. A small waterproof backpack cover is also vital.

Get a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder. You can purchase boiled water from the porters at night, so you want something reliable that holds at least 2 liters.

A few pairs of good quality, non-cotton hiking socks are better than many cheap pairs. Wet or sweaty feet are a fast track to blisters, so moisture-wicking fabric is a must.
