Cash or card in Japan these days?

Should I withdraw a ton of Yen or are credit cards accepted most places, especially in restaurants and smaller shops?

Always carry cash, especially for street food, temple entrances, and smaller spots outside the major city centers, cards work at most big hotels and department stores though.
