From classic bistros to Michelin-starred gems, my favorite spots in Paris
Paris and food are synonymous. You have your croissants, your escargots, your bistro food, and of course, those decadent desserts. I've eaten my way across this fantastic city for a long time, and while I've had many fine restaurants, these are the ones I keep coming back to. If you're looking for a quick dinner or a once-in-a-lifetime experience in fine dining, these five restaurants are Paris' best.
During my first trip to Paris, I stumbled upon Le Comptoir du Relais in the Saint-Germain area. It's a classic Parisian bistro that serves traditional French fare with a little creativity. The ambiance is cozy, with tourists and locals sharing the same meal.
Their confit duck is famous for being crispy outside and tender inside. I also like their French onion soup; it's rich, flavorful, and the perfect start to any meal. Everyone who works here is so nice, and despite the fact that it is a popular place, you'll always feel like you're eating at one of your local favorites. Reservations are necessary, though, since it fills up fast!
If you’re in the mood for something truly extraordinary, L'Arpège is a must-visit. This three-Michelin-star restaurant, helmed by the famous chef Alain Passard, is known for its vegetable-centric dishes and innovative approach to French cuisine.
I had the pleasure of dining here a couple of years ago, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Each course felt like a work of art. The vegetable tasting menu was incredible as it was fresh, vibrant, and surprisingly filling. Every bite was like a culinary festival of earth's bounty. The service was impeccable and the wine pairing was seamless. For a fine dining experience that'll leave you open-mouthed in awe, L'Arpège is the place to be.
For a more historical restaurant, I always recommend Le Procope. It is Paris's oldest café, opened in 1686, and has had Voltaire and Rousseau patronizing it for centuries. The atmosphere is old-fashioned quaintly, and you feel like you are going back centuries.
Their coq au vin is excellent and divine, and their escargots are prepared to a "T." I also love their crème brûlée. It has the perfect balance of crunchy caramelized sugar and smooth vanilla custard. Le Procope is great if you wish to indulge in traditional French cuisine in a setting that exudes history.
If you’re into modern, creative French cuisine, then Septime is the spot. Located in the 11th arrondissement, this Michelin-starred restaurant focuses on seasonal, sustainable ingredients in a minimalist, yet elegant setting.
I ate here last year, and I was impressed by the innovative flavors. The tasting menu is a journey of textures and flavors, and each dish felt new and interesting. One of my highlights was their carrot and seaweed course. It was simple, but full of flavor. The service is friendly but not stuffy, and the atmosphere is relaxed, so the whole thing felt special but not pretentious.
And then there are times when you just need a simple steak and fries, and that is where Le Relais de l'Entrecôte comes in. This tiny café in the 6th arrondissement is famous for its simple yet perfect steak frites. You don't get a menu here. Instead, you're given one option: steak with their proprietary sauce, accompanied by crunchy fries.
I've been here a few times, and it's never let me down. Steak is always cooked to my preference, and the sauce is thick and flavorful. It was a perfect complement to the tender meat. The fries are hot, crispy, and impossible to resist. It's a no-frills, pleasurable experience that I can always count on when I'm in the mood for something classic.
Paris has no shortage of incredible dining options. Whether you’re after a traditional French bistro, an innovative Michelin-star experience, or something in between, the city has it all. These five restaurants represent the best of what Paris has to offer, and each one holds a special place in my heart (and stomach). If you’re planning a trip to Paris, don’t miss these spots. They’re where the city’s culinary magic truly comes to life.
