Tokyo, the cosmopolitan and dynamic capital of Japan, is a unique city that throbs with a distinct and contagious energy. It is an interesting city where ancient, tested customs go hand-in-hand with the most advanced developments in the latest technology to create an interesting blend of old and new. Every corner of this massive city has something new and thrilling to discover. Whether you are a history buff, a shopaholic who loves visiting retail areas, a foodie who wants to sample a variety of culinary delights, or just an adventurous one who craves new sensations, Tokyo has something special in store for you. Here is a rundown of the best things to do in this wonderful city based on my personal experiences and discoveries.
Tokyo's oldest and holiest temple is the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Thousands of people visit the temple and the surrounding area every day. Walking through the Thunder Gate, I was impressed by the deep red lanterns and the bustling Nakamise-dori street leading up to the temple. It is a peaceful place where you can not only admire the buildings but soak up the history as well. If there was any place to absorb the traditional culture of Japan even in modern times then it must be this place, I recommend spending some time here, even just to observe people and absorb the culture.
No other place defines Tokyo’s city skyline more than Tokyo Tower. To have a breathtaking panoramic view of Tokyo, ascend this iconic tower. The 333-meter-high tower is a symbol of the city's post-war reconstruction and has some of the finest views of the city's vastness. I went up it just as the sun was setting, and to watch the city change from day to night was pure magic. The city lights' glow was enchanting, and on clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji in the distance. For many others, being able to behold this tower is enough for them. It’s become a trend to even get photos of the tower in the background.
Harajuku is the center of Tokyo youth culture, and no visit to the city would be complete without a visit to Takeshita Street. The street is lined with offbeat shops, street vendors, and all manner of crazy fashion. I spent hours just roaming around, sampling yummy crepes, and picking up some interesting accessories. It's the ideal place to relax, look around, and observe the more bizarre side of Tokyo fashion. If quirky discoveries and people-watching are your thing, this one's not to be missed.
Shibuya is Tokyo's busiest precinct, and it's where you head if you enjoy shopping or simply the vibe of city life. Shibuya Crossing itself is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world and is a spectacle. It's as if the city pulses in the moment people flood in from every angle onto the streets. I've spent hours shopping in Shibuya, darting from high-street chains to tiny independent shops, and there's always something new to discover.
A boat tour of the Sumida River provides a whole new perspective of Tokyo's cityscape. The peace of the river and the riverfront high-rise buildings provides a soothing experience that is difficult to get in such a vibrant city. I did a boat tour in the morning, and it was the ideal way to relax and view the city from a different angle. If you need a soothing respite from Tokyo's pace, this is the ticket.
Tokyo is a city of contrasts. There are century-old temples and high-rise skyscrapers, and neon bright streets and serene parks. There's no shortage of things to do, whether you're an adventurer, a shopper, or a history lover. My time in Tokyo was full of memories that I will never forget, and every second brought me further and further in love with this incredible city. If you do find yourself traveling to Tokyo, these are the perfect things to do to get you going, but don't forget to also discover the secret gems of Tokyo.
