What is the actual best time of year to visit Australia for great weather

I want to see Sydney Melbourne and the Great Barrier Reef but avoiding extreme heat or rain is tricky what months are best

Aim for the shoulder seasons, so March-May or September-November; the weather is mild down south and the wet season is less of an issue up north then.
