Should I try to book hotels outside of the main tourist areas?

I want to save a little money and see a more local side of the cities, is it too inconvenient without great English support.

Stick close to a main metro station, that's key. You might find less English spoken but local places are usually safe and the metro makes getting everywhere easy enough.
