I only have one full day in Beijing and want to see the main sights, can I really manage the whole Palace Museum or should I prioritize certain halls.

You can do it, but it will be rushed. Focus on the central axis and the Clock Exhibition Hall, then head to Jingshan Park across the street for the best overview picture.
