How many days should I budget for Sydney and Melbourne on a first trip

I have two weeks total for Australia so how much time should I allocate to the two main cities to see the highlights and not rush

Give both cities at least 3-4 full days each, that lets you cover the city sights and squeeze in a day trip like the Blue Mountains or the Great Ocean Road.
